Zebras live in small family groups consisting of a stallion, his mares and their foals. Strong bonds can develop between family members and a stallion is particularly attentive when one of ‘his’ females comes into season. He must be at her side all the time, to make sure a competing stallion does not to try to steal her away.
The photograph that inspired this drawing was taken north west of Satara in the central region of the Kruger National Park. Large herds of zebra sometimes gather in the grasslands here and competition between males can be intense – all the more reason for the stallion to stay close to his mare.
