Elephant MirageEd Bredenkamp
I really enjoy ‘playing’ with abstract backgrounds. It gives me the chance to slap and smear and throw the paint around without worrying about set lines and specific definition. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I can either end up with a muddy mess or something that I could find inspiring, something that leads me on to other ideas.
This painting of a small family group of elephants came from a photograph I took in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. It was late in the afternoon, it had rained an hour or so earlier and there were puddles of water everywhere. As the sun dropped to the horizon it threw a brilliant light on to the elephants and the distant storm clouds and for a brief moment everything turned golden.
Print from an original oils on canvas painting.
