Elephant Walk

This painting comes from a photograph I took in the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Elephant families have incredibly tight bonds and related females may stay together for their entire lives. This small group (who were part of a much larger herd) consists of an older female and her calf at the front while at the back is a younger but still mature female and her calf. The two adult females would certainly be related, probably a mother and her adult daughter. The small calf in the middle could belong to either of them.

I stumbled by accident upon this dappled paint technique, it involves a specific, transparent raw umber oil paint and turpentine. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t! I always do the background first and then decide what image would be most appropriate to accompany it.
