“I have always had a passion for the great South African landscape and have gathered images on numerous road trips which I interpret to capture the beauty and tranquility of our beautiful country.”
The Karoo is a vast semi-desert in the South African interior. No exact definition of what constitutes the Karoo is available but it is described by its topography, geology and climate; and above all, its low rainfall, arid air, cloudless skies and extremes of heat and cold.
The Karoo formed an almost impenetrable barrier to the interior from Cape Town and early adventurers, explorers, hunters and travellers denounced it as a frightening place of great heat, great frosts, periodic floods and terrible droughts. Today, it is still a place of climatic extremes although the presence of underground water makes some agricultural activity and human settlement possible. The Karoo is a beautiful place; it can be harsh and unforgiving but the windswept plains, austere landscape and solitude they provide can quickly become addictive.
