The reference for this painting is from a photograph I took on the famous S100 road, east of the Satara Rest Camp in the central region of the Kruger National Park. The S100 is most well known for its incredible sightings of predators – particularly lions. I don’t think I’ve done this route and not seen them. On this particular afternoon I was heading back to the camp when a male cheetah suddenly popped up in the grassland ahead of me. He crossed the road and stood in the middle of the track for a moment but I fumbled with the camera and was too slow to get a photo. Cursing my clumsiness I drove slowly on as he moved towards a grove of trees. Just as I thought he was going to disappear, he promptly plopped himself down on a smooth, raised outcrop of rock and stared back at me.
