(a) GIRAFFE TOWER DIPTYCH – An Original Oil Painting
The inspiration for this painting came from a series of photographs I took in the Acacia forests along the Dete Valley bordering Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. There are a number of collective nouns for giraffes – herd, journey, corps and totter – but for this painting the word ‘tower’ seems most applicable. It’s only when you get really close to a giraffe that its immense size hits you; males can be up to six metres from hoof to horn. These giraffe were intent on feeding on fresh Acacia leaves and so allowed me to get very close; looking up at them the word ‘tower’ never seemed more appropriate.
