Purple Heron Sculpture – (Ozoroa Wood)

R7,000.00

“I am inspired by the rough, unique character that wood takes as it erodes. My medium of choice is mainly driftwood, found wood and mineralized wood and each piece is unique and can never be copied or reproduced. I use the patterns formed through aging and erosion to interpret the shapes that I believe are already hidden beneath the surface of the wood,  shapes just waiting to be discovered. My work therefore is to complete what nature has already created.”

This Purple Heron has been carved from Ozoroa wood (Ozoroa sphaerocarpa.)  The species occurs in the southern parts of Mozambique and the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Kwa-ZuluNatal provinces of South Africa. It flourishes in woodlands and bushveld. The bark, roots and leaves of this species all have medicinal uses; specifically the tree bark which is used to treat chest inflammation and dysentery. Old tree trunks are believed to last longer than metal and are used as fence posts and to build livestock enclosures.
