Sipho – The Gift

Ed Bredenkamp

The name ‘Sipho’ means gift in Xhosa, Zulu and Ndebele and is often given to the first born son – an indication that his birth is regarded as a gift from above. I took the photograph that inspired this drawing in an Ndebele village in the Matobo Hills in southern Zimbabwe. It was early in the morning and the young boy was enjoying the warmth and sugary sweetness of the day’s first cup of tea.
