“I am inspired by the rough, unique character that wood takes as it erodes. My medium of choice is mainly driftwood, found wood and mineralized wood and each piece is unique and can never be copied or reproduced. I use the patterns formed through aging and erosion to interpret the shapes that I believe are already hidden beneath the surface of the wood, shapes just waiting to be discovered. My work therefore is to complete what nature has already created.”
This Bird Sculpture has been carved from Mopane wood (Colophospermum mopane.) The wood is sourced from Namibia and comes from the roots of trees that died hundreds of years ago. ‘New’ wood is never used or collected. The wood is reddish brown with a thin outer yellow sap layer. An extremely hard and dense wood, Mopane has some of the most beautiful colours and textures once the sculpture is waxed.
