I took the photograph that provided the reference for this drawing close to the Crocodile River Bridge in the southern section of the Kruger National Park, South Africa. It was late morning and the heat was beginning to build; I watched as a group of five bull elephants came up from the river and stood quietly in the shade of  several large Marula trees. It was a scene of complete tranquility, the elephants occasionally flapping their ears to keep cool, the river behind them sparkling in the harsh light and in the distance an Emerald Spotted Wood Dove giving its slow, monotonous, mournful call – ‘My mother is gone, my father is gone, all my relatives have gone and my heart cries too, too, too, to0, to0.’
