The GatheringEd Bredenkamp
I took the photograph that inspired this painting on the Liuwa Plains in north-western Zambia. The Liuwa is home to Africa’s second largest animal migration after the Serengeti in East Africa. While the numbers of animals involved at Liuwa is not nearly as immense as the Serengeti, there is a sense of wildness and isolation at Liuwa that is difficult to find elsewhere. It was impossibly difficult to get there when I went (it is much easier now.) We drove through the night on barely discernable tracks, through dense teak woodland and across the sandy bottom of a waist high river. We arrived at Liuwa at sunrise, it had rained during the night and the grasslands were awash in a golden light. The first animals were saw were a small group of zebra, it looked as though they had been waiting for us on the edge of the plains.
