Whale Tail

R5,400.00

“I am inspired by the rough, unique character that wood takes as it erodes. My medium of choice is mainly driftwood, found wood and mineralized wood and each piece is unique and can never be copied or reproduced. I use the patterns formed through aging and erosion to interpret the shapes that I believe are already hidden beneath the surface of the wood,  shapes just waiting to be discovered. My work therefore is to complete what nature has already created.”

This Whale Tail has been carved from Common Resin Wood (Ozoroa reticulata.) It is found in Zimbabwe along river banks and open fields. The wood has a beautiful dark brown to reddish finish and has become one of Boniface’s favourites to work with as it is soft and easy to work on. ‘New’ wood is never used or collected, all the material comes from dried trees and roots that have been dead for decades.

Size: 320mm x 120mm x 350mm. (The measurement of 350mm indicates the height of the sculpture once it is mounted on the metal stand.)
