LEOPARD – ‘LOOKING BACK.’

An original framed etching.

To produce an etching, I first start by doing a drawing. Once this is complete, I scratch the image on to a thin sheet of plexiglass using an etching needle, this becomes the etching plate. I cover the plate with etching ink which settles into the scratched grooves. I carefully wipe away the excess ink, leaving a small amount to cover the surface of the plate.

Catherine is constantly inspired by the natural forms she sees all around her – seed pods, succulents, Fynbos flowers, cacti and sea urchins, these are the sources for much of her creativity. By combining her skills at sculptural work and the use of multiple glazes, Catherine reinterprets natural forms to create beautiful ceramic art pieces.

Collecting Water from the River

In most parts of southern Africa, rural villages get their water from scattered well points, boreholes and rivers. Collecting water can be an arduous task and may involve a twice daily walk of several kilometres. Women from adjoining villages often walk together, heavy containers of water balancing on the heads as they traverse dusty footpaths. As strenuous as their efforts are, the women often use this time to catch up with friends, to avail themselves of the latest village gossip and to maintain the strong social bonds that help create a vibrant community.
