This mature bull elephant was standing on the banks of the Zambezi River upstream from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe when I encountered him. It was almost sunset; I was with friends on a boat and we had been watching a small pod of hippo slowly emerging from the water for their night time foraging. He was resting beneath a huge Natal Mahogany and the deep shade of the tree made it difficult to see him at first. We switched off the engine of the boat and drifted silently towards him; unaware of our presence, he stepped out of the shadows towards the riverbank and the setting sun suddenly illuminated him.

Description
I am frequently asked why I paint red elephants and I don’t have an easy answer, other than an unnecessary “Why not?” I do paint elephants in their natural colour but there seems to be something about the red that captures the essence of the animal, it’s immense power and presence. And sometimes, at sunset, when an elephant emerges dripping wet from a waterhole and the light catches it’s skin at just the right angle, it does seem to glow with an otherworldly radiance.
