Namaqualand Girl

No need to rush anywhere.

Every spring the arid Namaqualand landscape is magically transformed into a wonderland of colourful daisies. Casually balancing an ostrich egg on her head, Namaqualand Girl gathers daisies with an ostrich and a rose-ringed parakeet. Ostriches have long played an important role in the lives of many African tribes. They have featured in stories – how the bird with no teeth outwitted the lion and why its neck is so long. Ostrich feathers were used for tribal adornment long before they were fashionable in Europe. Ostrich fat mixed with red ochre became ritual body paint and an ostrich egg is considered the most powerful aphrodisiac in Africa.
