(ll) Last Light Over Groot Swartberg Karoo

This image was eventually captured after three evenings of chasing the light. It is an experience I will never forget.

In my pursuit of the Southern African landscape, I have been privileged to visit many remote and beautiful places. From Namibia to the Richtersveld, from the Drakensberg to the Cape, the landscape has never disappointed.

Working in colour, my aim has always been to capture that fleeting moment when the lighting is at its best. Often it is a small window of opportunity which demands instant and, often intuitive decisions regarding exposure, composition and camera placement.

The Karoo, formed as an ancient basin over 300 million years ago, is a land of legend, mystery and contrasts. The colour of its mountains and plains have been bleached by searing heat and the little moisture that accumulates soon evaporates. With annual rainfall ranging from 50mm to 250mm, the Karoo is indeed a living desert.

Despite the hostile conditions, flora and fauna have adapted and survive; but it is only with the early morning and evening light that this prehistoric landscape comes to life.

The palette of colours and hues that greet the photographer and artist has to be experienced to be believed and fully appreciated.

“At first encounter the Karoo may seem arid, desolate and unforgiving, but to those who know it, it is a land of secret beauty and infinite variety.” Eve Palmer. The Plains of Cambedoo
