(l) Linocut – Baobab (Small) on ‘Atlas’ Map

R990.00

There are many myths and legends associated with the Baobab Trees of Africa. Given their immense size and age, that is not surprising. The Bushmen of Southern Africa say that when God made the Baobabs he was angry and threw them down to earth; they landed upside down and to this day their roots still stick up into the air. Another Bushmen legend says that the Baobab was the first tree to appear on the earth and from within its gnarled trunk all living creatures, including mankind, emerged.

This Linocut was inspired by a photograph I took of ‘The Big Tree’, a huge Baobab close to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe that is estimated to be three thousand years old.

This Linocut is delivered rolled in a tube, ready for framing. If you are interested in purchasing more than one item, please contact us at macbred@icloud.com so we can arrange a consolidated shipping quote.

Description

This is an original Linocut. To produce the Linocut, an image is first drawn on to paper and then transferred to a sheet of Lino. Using specialized tools and a surgeon’s scalpel, the raised sections of Lino not required are delicately cut away and removed. Lino ink is applied to the Linocut which is then placed face down on to the map and carefully compressed with a roller, transferring the ink to the paper. It is a time consuming process subject to many errors. This is a limited edition Linocut of 100. It is delivered in a tube, ready for framing.
