The Swartberg Mountains and surrounding Karoo received abundant rainfall during the winter of 2023. This unusual season resulted in an unexpected explosion of flowers in early spring. Suddenly the normally dry and dusty Karoo plains were awash in fields of purple and lilac as the aptly named ‘Purple Carpet Plant’ (Drosanthemum Floribundum) erupted into full bloom. It may be many years before such a spectacle occurs again.

In my pursuit of the Southern African landscape, I have been privileged to visit many remote and beautiful places. From Namibia to the Richtersveld, from the Drakensberg to the Cape, the landscape has never disappointed.

Working in colour, my aim has always been to capture that fleeting moment when the lighting is at its best. Often it is a small window of opportunity which demands instant and, often intuitive decisions regarding exposure, composition and camera placement.
