The yellow-billed hornbill, the umkolwana (‘believer’ in isiZulu) perches on her head. To the Zulus this strange looking bird is an omen of good fortune and can predict the coming rain before there are clouds on the horizon. Africa’s iconic lilac breasted roller keeps a lookout while brightly plumed sunbirds settle around her head and neck. There is a Shona myth about the goddess Dzivaguru who kept a pair of sunbirds to control the rising and the setting of the sun.
