‘These beautiful orchids come from a plant my late mother gave me many years ago. Once a year I notice the first bud-laden shoots slowly pushing up from within the dense mass of leaves and soon there are three or four stems of white and purple blossoms, erupting like delicate fireworks from the bottom of the garden; and whenever I see them I remember to thank my Mom for the gifts she gave me.’
