(d) FLIGHTS OF FANCY – Wildlife Print

Blue Cranes (also known as Stanley Cranes or Paradise Cranes) are the national bird of South Africa and are frequently seen in the countryside surrounding my home town of Hermanus.
The Blue Crane is culturally significant to the Xhosa people of South Africa who call it ‘indwe’. Traditonally, when a man distinguished himself in battle or otherwise, he was often decorated by the chief with Blue Crane feathers in a ceremony called ‘ukundzabela.’ Men so honoured, who would wear the feathers sticking out of their hair, were known as ‘ugaba’ (trouble) ~ the implication being that if trouble arose, they would reinstate peace and order.
