I took the photograph that was the reference for this drawing on an afternoon drive to the west of Pafuri, a beautiful area in the far north of the Kruger National Park. A huge bull elephant emerged from the mopane woodland on to the road and slowly made his way towards me. By the time I realized he was not going to turn away it was too late, I was on a tight corner and so could not reverse and the bush around me was too thick to allow much manoeuvring. I held my breath as he came even closer, eventually stopping with his knees almost touching the front of the vehicle. I took one photo through the windscreen and then dropped the camera into my lap, too scared to move. Everything seemed to freeze, even the birds stopped singing! After what was probably a short time but seemed like a very long time, the bull shook his head once, turned away and disappeared into the bush, leaving me dry mouthed and shaken.
