The Venus Protea is a hybrid between Protea Repens (the Sugarbush) and Protea Aristata. It is a dense evergreen shrub with green foliage and stunning red flower bracts that burst into bloom during summer, attracting masses of pollinators including butterflies, bees and birds. Protea Arista is endemic to the Swartberg mountain range of the South African Karoo and was only discovered in the 1920’s. When the leaves or stems are picked, an offensive and unpleasant sulphuric odour is produced, making it unsuitable for the cutflower trade. However the hybrid ‘Venus’ has successfully been cultivated for the flower markets of the world.
