(e) THE SILENT ASSASSIN – Wildlife Print

R3,800.00

The leopard is Africa’s silent assassin. They are secretive and elusive and highly adaptable. They can live in a huge range of habitats; from hot, dry Kalahari sands to lush, wet mountain forests. They can also sometimes live right on our doorsteps without us even knowing. There is a story of a wildlife researcher living in Nairobi where he was writing a thesis on the fact that leopards were disappearing from most of their habitats, not realizing that within a few kilometres of his home, wild leopards were roaming suburban streets at night, living on domestic dogs and chickens.

I took the photograph that inspired this drawing in the Satara region of the Kruger National Park. It was mid-morning, a time when most leopards are fast asleep but this female had other ideas. She had stationed herself on top of an anthill overlooking a waterhole and was keeping a careful eye out for any potential prey. She was unconcerned about my presence, only glancing occasionally in my direction to ensure I was not going to spoil her hunt.
