R3,200.00
The life of a male zebra stallion is not an easy one. Zebras live in small family groups consisting of a stallion, his mares and their foals. While they may form part of a much bigger herd, the family group stays together under the watchful eye of the leading stallion. Not only must he protect his family from predators, he must also ensure that competing males do not try and lure away ‘his’ mares.
This drawing is from a photograph I took on the Liuwa plains in north western Zambia. The Liuwa is an enormous grassland that draws in tens of thousands of animals in late October when the rains arrive and turn the brown, dusty landscape into a carpet of lush, green grass. Immense herds of zebra arrive in the company of wildebeeste and tsessebe and the sound of braying, snorting and grunting echo across the grasslands. While the abundance of fresh grass makes life easier for the zebra mares, for the leading stallions it can be stressful and exhausting to keep the family together and safe.
