Linocut – Wait For Me on ‘Sudspitze’ Map
Nothing ever has half as much fun as an elephant in water. Even large bulls abandon all dignity when they get into a deep waterhole, throwing themselves about like small boys in a swimming pool. Younger calves tend to be more cautious, particularly if the banks of the waterhole are slippery with mud; but once they find their footing and immerse themselves, their sheer joy is unrivalled. They splash and tumble, pushing and shoving, clambering over each other and at times disappearing completely underwater. When the adult females start drifting away, the calves are torn between following their mothers – which they must do – or staying in the water for one last game – which is an irresistible temptation. And so they do both. Reluctantly they will leave the water, heavy footed with regret and then suddenly turn around and rush back to their cousins who are still cavorting and splashing about. This turnaround can happen three or four times before the adult females are about to disappear into the trees and then the calves will emerge from the water and run, squealing to the safety of their mother’s sides.

This is an original Linocut. To produce the Linocut, an image is first drawn on to paper and then transferred to a sheet of Lino. Using specialized tools and a surgeon’s scalpel, the raised sections of Lino not required are delicately cut away and removed. Lino ink is applied to the Linocut which is then placed face down on to the map and carefully compressed with a roller, transferring the ink to the paper. It is a time consuming process subject to many errors. This is a limited edition Linocut of 100. It is delivered in a tube, ready for framing.
