A beautiful cobalt blue with washes of mauve, the Half-collared Kingfisher is an uncommon resident across parts of southern and east Africa. They are seldom far from water but tend to be shy and inconspicuous, sitting motionless for long periods of time with only an occasional bob of the head or flick of the tail. Unlike other kingfishers, when hunting they dive steeply into the water from their perches and seldom hover. Their diet is predominantly fish although they have been observed catching aquatic insects and frogs. Half-collared Kingfishers are monogamous, solitary nesters; both birds work together to excavate a burrow in a riverbank which they line with fish bones before laying eggs!
