African Hoopoe’s are distinctive birds with their cinnamon, black and white colouring and characteristic crests. They occur throughout sub-Saharan Africa and are frequent visitors to suburban gardens. Feeding mainly on insects and grubs, they will also take lizards, small frogs and even snakes.  Hoopoes nest in natural tree cavities, old woodpecker holes and occasionally termite mound chambers. During the breeding season they become highly territorial, both males and females seeing rivals off with frenetic displays that involve much raising and lowering of the head crest!
