(acp) LITTLE BEE-EATERS – A LIMITED EDITION PRINT

R1,950.00

Little Bee-Eaters are the world’s smallest bee-eaters being no longer than 16cm and weighing around 15g. They are endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, occurring from Mauritania and Sudan, down the continent to South Africa. They are present in a wide range of habitats, from dry to moist savannas, open country, lake shores, river banks and grassy clearings in forests. Little Bee-Eaters occur in pairs or small family parties, spending much of their time perched on grass stalks or low branches. They love to dust bath and sometimes splash onto water surfaces in flight. At night they roost in thickets, often over water, up to ten birds snuggled together on a branch, shoulder to shoulder, all facing the same direction. Little Bee-Eaters feed mostly on flying insects, taking their prey on the wing. If a stinging bee or wasp is caught, the tail end of the insect is rubbed against a perch until the sting and venom has been discharged.

I took the photograph that provided the reference for this painting close to the edge of the Sabie River in the Kruger National Park.
