Elephants have relatively poor eyesight but their sense of hearing and smell is exceptional, their trunks move constantly back and forth, detecting new scents and information. They can detect water sources up to 15km away and African elephants possess a sense of smell that is likely the strongest ever identified in a single species. They have nearly 2,000 special genes that detect odours in the environment and past studies have shown that elephants have more scent receptors than any other mammal. Elephants in Angola learnt to avoid minefields by detecting the smell of TNT. Another report concluded that elephants could use scent clues to tell the difference between two Kenyan ethnic groups, the Maasai, who traditionally speared them, and the Kamba, who did not. The elephants learnt to avoid the potentially dangerous Maasai while being more tolerant of the presence of the Kamba.
