(d) RED ELEPHANT – NKULU – Wildlife Print

Nkulu is a beautiful spot overlooking the Sabie River in the southern section of the Kruger National Park. The riverine forest here is dense and the banks of the Sabie are lined with immense Sycamore Figs, Jackal Berry and Fever Trees. The area is loved by elephants because of the rich variety of vegetation and the deep shade the tree canopy provides during the heat of the day. I took a photograph of this female elephant who was part of a small family group resting beneath a Sycamore Fig; a small calf lay in the sand at her feet, her trunk resting on it’s back. The whole scene was one of idyllic contentment.

Description

I am frequently asked why I paint red elephants and I don’t have an easy answer, other than an unnecessary “Why not?” I do paint elephants in their natural colour but there seems to be something about the red that captures the essence of the animal, it’s immense power and presence. And sometimes, at sunset, when an elephant emerges dripping wet from a waterhole and the light catches it’s skin at just the right angle, it does seem to glow with an otherworldly radiance.
