Mawu

R6,700.00

Mawu is an inter-weaving of different painting styles and cultural symbols. The title of the painting refers to the West African creation goddess, Mawu, who created the universe and everything in it. The ‘egg’ on her head contains galaxies as well as Japanese style ‘waves’ from which illustrative flying fish emerge. In Japanese art, waves are often used to represent motion and change. The presence of an iguana signifies good fortune in many cultures, as well as symbolising wisdom and patience. In ancient Egypt the sacred ibis was a symbol for the god Thoth who represented knowledge and learning. And in almost every tradition, the kingfisher indicates ‘beauty, virtue and good things to come’.
