I came across this male lion not far from the Tsilonde waterhole in the far north of the Kruger National Park. He was in the company of another male, probably his brother. They had killed a buffalo calf during the night and were lying close to what remained of the carcass. The lions were very relaxed, one was asleep with his head on his paws and the other lay on his back, belly extended and legs in the air. As if hit by a bolt of lightning, they were both suddenly fully alert and sitting up. They stared off into the distance and I tried hard to follow their gaze but couldn’t see what had caught their attention. And then I heard it, the faintest hint of a distant roar, it was barely audible to my poorly equipped senses but for the lions it was a call to action. They stood up, totally fixated on the sound and immediately began to walk quickly in the direction of the roar. As they disappeared into the tree line they both began to trot.
