R990.00
I came across this bull white rhino early one morning in the Matobo Hills in southern Zimbabwe. It was late summer and there was a slight mist in the air, the grass was still lush from the recent rains and the mopane trees, covered in their butterfly shaped leaves, were ablaze in shades of olive and green. I caught a glimpse of the rhino as he emerged from the mopane woodland into an open patch of grassland, like a creature from ancient times. I switched off the vehicle and waited as he slowly made his way into the clearing. It was the luxuriant meadow that had drawn him to this spot and he began munching steadily, his head swaying from side to side as he cropped the blades of grass so that by the time he finished this glade would look like it belonged in a garden or suburban park. The Matobo Hills are an area of spectacular granite outcrops, gigantic boulders pile one on top of another, huge sheets of rock rise out of the earth like gigantic onions bubbling up from a scalding pot. It’s a landscape where rhinos belong and on this morning, in the mist, in this beautiful setting, it looked as though one of the huge, grey boulders themselves had suddenly come to life.

Description
This is an original Linocut. To produce the Linocut, an image is first drawn on to paper and then transferred to a sheet of Lino. Using specialized tools and a surgeon’s scalpel, the raised sections of Lino not required are delicately cut away and removed. Lino ink is applied to the Linocut which is then placed face down on to the map and carefully compressed with a roller, transferring the ink to the paper. It is a time consuming process subject to many errors. This is a limited edition Linocut of 100. It is delivered in a tube, ready for framing.
