I took the photograph that provided the reference for this painting in the south eastern corner of the Kruger National Park. It was in an area of dense bush and as I came around the corner I almost collided with a large bull elephant! Luckily he got much less of a fright than I did, this area of the park can get quite busy and he must have been fairly used to vehicles. He was feeding on a large wild teak and after glaring at me for a moment he quickly resumed his lunch, his eyelids drooping lazily as he stuffed leaves and twigs into his mouth.

Description
I am frequently asked why I paint red elephants and I don’t have an easy answer, other than an unnecessary “Why not?” I do paint elephants in their natural colour but there seems to be something about the red that captures the essence of the animal, it’s immense power and presence. And sometimes, at sunset, when an elephant emerges dripping wet from a waterhole and the light catches it’s skin at just the right angle, it does seem to glow with an otherworldly radiance.
