(acp) AFRICAN BLACK OYSTERCATCHER – A LIMITED EDITION PRINT

R1,500.00

The African Black Oystercatcher is endemic to the coastline of southern Africa and inhabits rocky shores and sandy beaches. They generally occur in pairs or small groups but at times roost at night in large numbers, particularly at high tide. Oystercatchers feed almost entirely along the intertidal zone, searching for mussels, limpets, mud prawns and crabs. Mussels are opened by a sharp jab to the back of the shell which cuts the muscle holding the shell closed. They are monogamous solitary nesters and are very territorial when nesting, chasing intruders away with loud calls and ritualized displays. The nest is a simple scrape in sandy ground or if in a rocky area, the nest may be lined with shell fragments and rock chips. Only one or two eggs are laid and the chicks hatch after an incubation period of approximately thirty days.
